Working on this brief was a very different experience as it was a collaborative project, we started by meeting the group of performing arts students that we were working with on this brief, they already had a clear idea as to what they wanted with the film.
Another aspect that made it a hard project was the subject, Kantor is a very specific yet open subject as the film was going to portray meaning yet it had no set story line or dialog.
We then all arranged a day to shoot and started to plan scenes and how they would be composed etc., as we were told when the brief was given to us this would be hard to work together as in previous years the performing arts students felt like puppets to the film students and at times the film students felt like employees to the performing arts students.
When I first met our group, I set this out that we should all be working together on the film and if anyone had any idea that they should share it with the group as it was as much our film as theirs.
We had all planned that the film would take place across 5 location, I did think this was possible if we had the right amount of time in the day, unfortunately not all our group were able to make it to the filming so myself and Emily went along to shoot. I did unfortunately have equipment to return on that day which was an inconvenience as I had to leave for 2 hours.
We didn’t manage to get all the locations shot so we had to add and additional day to filming, again the group couldn’t make this day so I went alone to the final day of filming, this was all done before midday and I managed to get all the footage onto my hard drive and ready to give to Rob for editing.
The performing arts students had a trip to Poland not long after the second filming day which was inconvenient as we had to get some sound footage off them to add to the film. We did manage to get this in the end and it was added to the edit.
In terms of editing the film I was going to do the final edit but as I was so busy I didn’t manage to get around to it, so myself and Rob had a chat and decided that he would also make and edit and this turned out to be the best option, I find this was the best option anyway as he unfortunately couldn’t make it to the shoots.
If I were to do this again I feel like more pre-production would be needed as we didn’t plan every aspect of the film, I feel that it did go well though given we had less than 5 days for pre-production and in that time, we were all busy and managed to keep in contact and get the film made. I am not sure that our final film is exact vison of the performing arts students but as it was said in the brief it’s a collaborative project so we have put aspects that we feel add to the feel of the film and film production values.
